CHI TIẾT CÁC HOẠT ĐỘNG NGHIÊN CỨU & THÀNH QUẢ:
i) Hoạt động nghiên cứu:
Tốt nghiệp trung học phổ thông trường Quốc Học, Huế (1964), kỹ sư canh nông
trường cao đẳng Nông Lâm Súc, Saigon (1968). Sau khi tốt nghiệp đại học, được học bổng của Bộ Quốc Gia Giáo Dục Nhật Bản (Monbusho) đi Nhật học cao học.
Tại Nhật, hoàn thành luận án Thạc sĩ (1972) tại đại học Ehime và Tiến sĩ
(1977) tại đại học Tokyo. Nghiên cứu sinh hậu tiến sĩ (tạo giống rau
quả) tại hãng hạt giống Takii (1977-79) và nghiên cứu viên phụ tá giáo sư (tạo
giống lúa) tại đại học Tokyo (1979-80). Cùng và gia đình sang Úc tháng 12
năm 1980.
Tại Úc tôi được Viện nghiên cứu cỏ thảm Úc châu (Australian Turfgrass
Institute) tuyển dụng làm Chuyên viên nghiên cứu Di truyền & Tạo giống cỏ thảm
(1980-81) và sau đó Bộ Nông Nghiệp bang NSW tuyển dụng (1981) với chức vụ
Chuyên viên nghiên cứu ngành Rau quả. Từ năm 1981 cho đến nay (2006) tôi chỉ
làm việc với Bộ Nông Nghiệp bang NSW và chủ trì nhiều dự án nghiên cứu trong đó
có một số dự án chính như sau:
· Nghiên cứu di truyền & tạo giống rau quả (Cà chua): Tôi phóng thích 5 giống
cà chua. Đó là các giống Sunny, Summit, Fire Fox, Red Centre và Juliette. Các
giống này có năng xuất cao và chất lượng tốt, trong đó giống F1 rin “Red
Centre” đã được sử dụng rộng rãi ở 10 quốc gia trên thế giới do tính tồn trữ
cao vì có chứa gen rin/rin. Giống Red Centre đã được giới thiệu về Việt Nam và
được TS Đỗ Khắc Vịnh, phó Viện trưởng Viện Di truyền Nông nghiệp trồng thử
nghiệm vào những năm 1990s. Năng xuất bình quân đạt được 83 tấn quả/ha. Giống
Fire Fox vẫn còn được ái mộ cho đến ngày nay vì chất lượng quả ngon, hợp với
khẩu vị của người Úc (Papers
4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,30,32,35,42,,44,45,47,48,49,59,51,52,53,54,56,57,58,59,60,
62,63,76,68,69,71,72,73,74,76,80,81,82,83,86) .
· Nghiên cứu & Phát triển ngành rau quả Á châu cho thị trường trong nước (Úc)
và xuất khẩu: Tôi đã nghiên cứu & phát triển các loại rau quả xuất xứ Á châu
(gọi là rau quả Á châu) vì dự kiến sẽ có yêu cầu lớn về rau quả Á châu cho thị
trường Úc. Tôi đã chuyển giao công nghệ và phát triển ngành rau quả Á châu có
giá trị kinh tế không đáng kể vào những năm 1980s, tăng trị-giá-tại-vườn
(farm-gate) lên 50,4 triệu Úc kim năm 1993/94 và 135,8 triệu Úc kim năm
2002/03. Riêng tại bang NSW, rau quả Á châu có trị giá khoảng 70 triệu Úc kim,
trở thành mặt hàng rau quả lớn nhất của NSW. Thành tựu của chương trình nghiên
cứu của tôi đã được Bộ trưởng Bộ Nông Nghiệp bang NSW báo cáo trước quốc hội
vào tháng 5 năm 1995 (Papers 14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23,24,
25,26,27,33,34,36,38,39,64,65,66,75,85,92,95,96,98,104,
105,106,107,108,112,116,117,122,124,125,174,175).
· Nghiên cứu & Phát triển ngành Chè Xanh Nhật Bản cho thị trường trong nước
(Úc) và xuất khẩu: Chè xanh Nhật Bản được chế biến từ giống chè Camellia
sinensis var sinensis. Nghiên cứu cho thấy chất chống oxi hoá catechin trong
chè có khả năng chống ung thư, giảm cholesterol trong máu và diệt trùng. Người
Úc có thói quen uống chè đen, chỉ chứa khoảng 10% catechin trong khi ở chè xanh
lượng catechin có đến 40%. Nếu người Úc uống chè xanh, khả năng bệnh tim mạch
sẽ giảm vì bệnh này đã làm khoảng 150 người Úc thiệt mạng mỗi ngày. Về mặt kinh
tế, nếu Úc sản xuất chè xanh xuất khẩu sang Nhật, chè loại ngon hạng nhất
ichiban cha sẽ được sản xuất vào cuối năm, tức là khoảng thời gian phục vụ thị
trường Quà cáp vào dịp Tết, nên chè xanh của Úc sẽ có khả năng bán giá cao,
không phải cạnh tranh với chè Nhật hoặc TQ. Nhận thấy lợi thế đó nên tôi đã đề
xuất và được Bộ Nông nghiệp NSW đồng ý cho phép nghiên cứu & phát triển ngành
chè xanh cho bang NSW. Biết được tin này, công ty chè & cà phê Kunitaro,
Saitama, Nhật bản mời tôi cộng tác, làm chủ nhiệm chương trình nghiên cứu &
phát triển chè xanh xuất khẩu sang Nhật năm 1998. Cty Kunitaro đã đóng góp
100.000 Úc kim cho dự án có trị giá 650.000 Úc kim này. Chất lượng chè xanh
giống Yabukita và Samayakaori sản xuất tại Viện Nghiên Cứu Làm Vườn Gosford đưa
sang Nhật để kiểm tra chất lượng đã đạt được chất lượng “tuyệt hảo”
(excellent); đạt 88-98 trên thang điểm 100 AF Scores của Nhật. Kết quả này đã
làm công ty Kunitaro quyết định mua một lô đất 20ha gần Viện để xây dựng công
trường sơ chế chè xanh. Đây là một thành quả to lớn cho Úc châu vì từ đây chè
Úc sẽ được chế biến theo kỹ thuật Nhật, vốn được coi trọng trên thị trường quốc
tế (Papers 40,126).
· Nghiên cứu các kỹ thuật công nghệ cao ngành làm vườn nhà kính:
Úc có tổng số sản lượng lương thực khoảng 25 tỷ đô la Mỹ trong đó ngành làm
vườn có trị giá 4,5 tỷ Mỹ kim. Đây là một ngành không những có sản lượng kinh
tế lớn nhất trong các ngành nông nghiệp, mà còn là ngành chiếm một vị trí xã
hội đặc biệt quan trọng vì đã sử dụng nhiều lao động nhất; sử dụng tài nguyên
thiên nhiên hiệu quả nhất và có nhiều cơ hội xuất khẩu cho một thị trường nhập
khẩu thế giới lớn nhất với kim ngạch trên 100 tỷ Mỹ kim/năm. Để phát triển tốt
ngành này, Úc đã triển khai một ngành gọi là “ngành làm vườn nhà kính;
greenhouse horticulture” nghiên cứu và ứng dụng nhiều kỹ thuật công nghệ cao,
đưa ngành làm vườn trở thành một ngành mũi nhọn cho nông nghiệp Úc.
Ngày nay, gần 100% vùng đai xanh ven đô thành phố Sydney, Melbourne v.v… đã sản
xuất rau hoa quả trong nhà kính theo kỹ thuật công nghệ cao vừa bảo đảm an toàn
vệ sinh, năng xuất cao, chất lượng tốt, vừa giữ được tính bền vững nông nghiệp.
Năng suất 500 tấn cà chua hoặc 450 tấn dưa chuột/ha/năm không còn là một con số
không tưởng. Nông gia đã có một thu nhập khoảng hơn một triệu Úc kim/năm trong
một nhà lồng chỉ có diện tích 5.000m2! Toàn bộ chuyên viên thuộc Viện Nghiên
Cứu Làm Vườn Gosford, vừa là Viện Nghiên Cứu Quốc Gia Nhà Kính, đã và đang đóng
góp tích cực vào quá trình nghiên cứu và phát triển các kỹ thuật công nghệ cao
cho ngành mũi nhọn này của Úc (Papers 174,175).
· Hợp tác quốc tế: Về mặt hợp tác quốc tế, từ những năm đầu của thập kỷ 90s,
tôi đã được đại học nông nghiệp Tokyo, Nhật Bản mời làm chủ nhiệm chương trình
tập huấn sinh viên năm 4 của trường tại Úc. Tạp chí Khoa học của học hội “The
American Society for Horticultural Science” thỉnh thoảng mời làm giám khảo
(Scientific Referee) cho các bài nghiên cứu về rau quả của họ.
· Hợp tác với Việt Nam: Theo yêu cầu của đại học Cần Thơ, tôi đã soạn một
chương trình về “di truyền & tạo giống rau quả” để dạy 1 tín chỉ cho những lớp
Thạc sĩ đầu tiên của trường. Tín chỉ “tạo giống rau quả” cho lớp Thạc sĩ này đã
được cơ quan Crawford Funds của Úc châu tài trợ liên tục 4 năm (1995-1998) và
sau đó tín chỉ này lại được dạy cho lớp Thạc sĩ tại đại học Nông Lâm Huế
(2001-2003).
Năm 1999, TS Ngô Thế Dân, nguyên Thứ trưởng Bộ NN&PTNT, nhân dịp sang Úc công
tác đã yêu cầu chúng tôi xây dựng một dự án sản xuất rau sạch cho Việt Nam. Dự
án “Phát triển quan hệ giữa Việt Nam và Bộ Nông Nghiệp NSW để tạo điều kiện
nâng cao năng lực nghiên cứu và giảng dạy về ngành rau quả và sản xuất hạt
giống của Việt Nam” đã được Cơ quan Hợp tác Quốc tế Úc châu (AusAID) đồng ý tài
trợ 2 năm 2001-2003 (CARD-0016). Dự án thứ hai có mục đích “Nâng cao năng lực
nghiên cứu và phát triển trong lĩnh vực công nghệ cao, quản lý sau thu hoạch và
hệ thống kiểm tra chất lượng để cải thiện tính an toàn và chất lượng Rau Việt
Nam” do chúng tôi hợp tác với Viện Rau Quả Hà Nội đề xuất cũng được AusAID đồng
ý tài trợ trong 2 năm 2005-2007 (CARD004/04VIE).
Như vậy trong khoảng thời gian từ 2000 đến nay, các dự án hợp tác với Việt Nam
đã đưa được 15 chuyên viên rau quả Việt Nam sang Úc tập huấn (từ 4 tuần đến 2
năm). Sáu chuyên gia Úc châu thuộc Viện nghiên cứu ngành làm vườn Gosford gồm
các chuyên gia nghiên cứu về di truyền & tạo giống, canh tác, sâu & bệnh hại,
sau thu hoạch và quản lý chất lượng cũng đã đi Việt Nam để tổ chức các buổi làm
việc và hội thảo để chuyển giao công nghệ về kỹ thuật canh tác, sâu bệnh hại,
công nghệ sau thu hoạch, quản lý chất lượng và chu trình nông nghiệp an toàn
GAP (Good Agricultural Practice) cho rau quả. Trong 2 năm 2005, 2006 các buổi
hội thảo này đã tập huấn cho trên 400 cán bộ khuyến nông & cán bộ bảo vệ thực
vật của Bộ NN&PTNT, cán bộ giảng dạy các trường đại học nông nghiệp, nhân viên
quản lý rau quả ở các siêu thị và một số nông gia tiên tiến ở thành phố HCM, Hà
Nội, Cần Thơ và Đà Lạt. Tổng số tài chính các dự án tài trợ cho Việt Nam khoảng
hơn 1,5 triệu Úc kim (tương đương 20 tỷ đồng) (Papers
37,120,121,169,170,172,173,176,177,180,211,212,213,214).
Nhà khoa học đầu ngành về rau quả Á châu của Úc châu: Trong Hội nghị toàn quốc
“The First Australian New Crops” tổ chức ở đại học Queensland ngày 8 - 11 tháng
7 năm 1996, tôi được mời làm chủ toạ hội nghị và thuyết trình đề tài “Nghiên
cứu và phát triển rau quả cho thị trường Á châu, đặc biệt Nhật Bản”. Hội nghị
đã vinh danh tôi là một nhà khoa học đầu ngành về rau quả Á châu của Úc. Tôi
được Cơ quan Nghiên cứu & Phát triển Nông thôn RIRDC (Rural Industry Research &
Development Cooporation) thuộc chính phủ liên bang mời tham vấn về những chương
trình nghiên cứu rau quả cấp quốc gia mỗi năm (Paper 112).

ngoài nước tài trợ kinh phí tổng cộng khoảng 2.500.000 Úc kim để nghiên cứu &
phát triển các dự án. tc \l 4 "Financial assistance: "Ngoài ra, việc phóng
thích 5 giống cà chua cũng đã mang về cho Bộ Nông Nghiệp NSW khoảng 100.000 Úc
kim, là 10% tiền bản quyền hạt giống.
· Xuất ngoại công tác: Tôi đã xuất ngoại nhiều lần sang công tác và dự hội nghị
ở các nước Hoa Kỳ, Nhật Bản, Hàn Quốc, Thái Lan, Đài Loan và Việt Nam. Chi phí
những chuyến xuất ngoại này, khoảng 140.000 Úc kim, đều do các cơ quan tài trợ
nghiên cứu cấp liên bang và công ty trong và ngoài nước đài thọ.
